Course Objectives

  • Introduce basic concepts and fundamental methods of detection for discrete observations.
  • Introduce basic concepts and fundamental methods of parameter estimation for discrete observations.
  • Extend detection and esttimation methodology for continuous observations.
  • Introduce waveform estimation concepts and Wiener filtering.

Course Content

Detection theory: binary M-ary hypothesis testing. Estimation theory. Representation of stochastic processes: Karhunen-Loeve expansion. Detection and estimation of signal parameters in white and colored noise. Estimation of continuous waveforms. Optimum linear realizable processor: Wiener-Hopf equation and its solution.


Course Learning Outcomes

  • Ability to model detection and estimation problems in a formal manner.
  • Basic skills to solve detection and estimation problems to obtain optimal and/or practical detectors and estimators.
  • Ability to evaluate the theoretical performance limits and actual performance of an approximate practical detector/estimator.
