Course Objectives
- Introduce basic concepts and fundamental methods of detection for discrete observations.
- Introduce basic concepts and fundamental methods of parameter estimation for discrete observations.
- Extend detection and esttimation methodology for continuous observations.
- Introduce waveform estimation concepts and Wiener filtering.
Course Content
Detection theory: binary M-ary hypothesis testing. Estimation theory. Representation of stochastic processes: Karhunen-Loeve expansion. Detection and estimation of signal parameters in white and colored noise. Estimation of continuous waveforms. Optimum linear realizable processor: Wiener-Hopf equation and its solution.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Ability to model detection and estimation problems in a formal manner.
- Basic skills to solve detection and estimation problems to obtain optimal and/or practical detectors and estimators.
- Ability to evaluate the theoretical performance limits and actual performance of an approximate practical detector/estimator.
