Course Objectives

EDS 658 will familiarize students with curriculum policy at higher education level and internationalization. In that respect students attending this course will be able to

  • Investigate and engage with the major issues and trends of higher education curriculum policy influenced by the knowledge economy.
  • Address models of higher education curriculum transformation and internationalization of higher education.
  • Examine the main directions of European Higher Education Area and its reflections on Turkish Higher Education curriculum policy
  • Value a new vision in higher education curriculum and engage students in developing 21st Century skills.

Course Content

This course deals with understanding and examining current issues and trends in higher education curriculum policy with emphasis on internalization of higher education as a reform initiative created by the European Higher Education Area. The course will provide opportunities to investigate changes, needs and challenges for curriculum policy implementation in the 21 th Century.


Course Learning Outcomes

  • Develop awareness of the basic concepts related to contemporary trends in the higher education era.
  • Develop a practical understanding of different approaches and strategies for improving teaching and learning in higher education for the 21st Century.
  • Define globalization and internationalization and its impact on higher education.
  • Comprehend the influence of the Bologna on Higher Education Policy in Turkey and examine its effect on curriculum change and experience.
  • Discuss a need for developing an international perspective in curriculum policy making in higher education.
  • Discuss the pressures of globalization of higher education curriculum transformation, and local realities.
  • Address contemporary models of data-driven curriculum, transdisciplinary curriculum, multi-lingual programs compared with traditional models such as liberal arts curriculum.
  • Analyze authentic documents and develop strategic goals for the future of curriculum policy in higher education.
  • Examine current issues and trends in higher education curriculum policy through analyzing authentic contexts e.g., with a focus on student exchange and how it impacts on classroom practice.
  • Examine the instructional learning environment with international student populations and/or international faculty.
  • Address the issue of diverse student curricular needs such as multicultural higher education classroom and the interdisciplinary classroom.
  • Investigate and engage with the major issues of higher education curriculum policy through examining cases at national and/or international level.
  • Examine new trends in curriculum policy higher education spaces through case studies.
  • Explore and develop a practical understanding of different approaches and strategies for improving teaching and learning in higher education.
  • Improve or plan curriculum that meet the needs of 21st century higher education learning spaces. Examine emerging trends in curriculum policy and instruction in higher education such as MOOCS, virtual learning environments and other.
  • Develop strategic ideas to develop an international pedagogic and curricular vision as educators, future decision-makers, or leaders.
  • Accept a need for curriculum policy change and praxis in a globalized world. Value a global vision for curriculum change in higher education and measure its pros and cons.
