Course Objectives

By the end of this course students are expected to,

  • comprehend the relationship between schools and society
  • understand basic theories of sociology of education
  • comprehend the concept of equality of educational opportunity
  • understand the relationship between school and other instittions in the society
  • develop an interest in social issues with educational implications

Course Content

Study of the relationships between education and other societal subsystems, as including economy, politics, culture, technology and demography. More particularly examination of the relationships between school and other societal facts, as including family, gender ethnicity religion locality and social class.

Explain the basic characteristics of theories of sociology of education

Analyze the differences and similarities among theories

Explain the concept of equality of opportunity and reasons 

Discuss the reasons of inequalities in education in Turkish context and suggest solutions

Discuss the concept of hidden curriculum  and possible results

Discuss the effect of  gender on educational practices

Suggest possible ways of eliminating gender inequalities in educational contexts

Analyze the relationship between education and democracy

Suggest solutions for social issues which has implications for educational practices

Attend to the scholarly conversation on the relationship between education and society
