Course Objectives
At the end of this course students are expected to:
- Describe the issues of children in today’s world
- Know developmental needs, problems of children
- Understand counseling theories and interventions appropriate for use with children
- Use skills and techniques necessary to conduct counseling sessions with children
- Know play counseling process, skills and strategies
- Know skills necessary to conduct consultation with parents, teachers, and other helping professionals
- Know how to make appropriate referral for specialized help when necessary
- Gain awareness regarding ethical issues related to counselling with children
Course Content
Basic approaches to child counseling, utilizing play media in counseling, research on counseling and psychotherapy with children
Course Learning Outcomes
The students completing this course are expected to:
- Explain critical childhood issues that impact academic, personal/social, or career success, and overall development.of children as well as appropriate actions to take regardinng these issues
- Explain basic concepts, terms, principles regarding counseling with children
- Demonstrate various skills and techniques to be used in counseling with children
- Critique on counseling theories used with children
- Illustrate skills for effective referral process
- Illustrate skills necessary to conduct consultation with parents, teachers, and other helping professionals
- Explain how to cooperate with various stakeholders in the process of counseling with children
- Demonstrate an awareness of the ethical codes of conduct in counseling with children
- Critique on qualities that support and hinder working with children
