Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will learn

  • the process of constructing test items,
  • how to evaluate psychometric characteristics (mainly reliability and validity) of measures,
  • how to report findings technically, and
  • how to evaluate a number of published instruments. 

Course Content

Practicum providing experience in the construction of educational and psychological measuring instruments.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe the history and use of testing and assessment.
  • define and describe types of reliability and validity
  • describe the process of test development
  • write about theoretical concepts underlying the construction of a basic measurement scale and develop appropriate test items for the scale.
  • evaluate the psychometric characteristics of an instrument using computer software (e.g., SPSS, TAP, ITEMAN)
  • communicate for the discipline by creating, piloting, analyzing, writing, and reporting on an original test/measure created for the class.
