Course Objectives

The students completing this course are expected to:

  • comprehend the theories of counseling as well as their history, key concepts, and techniques 
  • understand the strengths and limitations of each theory
  • learn to apply theories to specific cases
  • develop awareness about personal values, beliefs, philosophies, and interpersonal skills that will affect their personal counseling theory and style.

Course Content

This graduate level course is designed to familiarize students with several major theoretical approaches in counseling and psychotherapy and help them integrate these approaches with practice. A secondary goal is to introduce the wide variety of styles and practices used by leaders in the field of counseling and psychotherapy.
