Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the student will:
- understand both descriptive and inferential statistics conceptually
- develop an understanding of the logic of hypothesis testing
- develop computer skills associated with SPSS
- develop an ability to review and interpret statistical outputs
Course Content
Basic statistical techniques for carrying out an educational research. Coding and entering data, use of descriptive statistics for data tabulation and summarization. Percentiles and standard scores, normal distribution, sampling distribution and central limit theorem, correlation and simple linear regression analysis, hypothesis testing for one and two sample cases, z, t, F, chi-square distributions, one and two way analyses of variance.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- define statistical concepts
- describe the relationship among major statistical concepts (e.g., Type I and II errors, power, alpha, effect size, sample size)
- choose the appropriate statistical test
- calculate a variety of statistical tests (e.g., z score, t test) by hand
- conduct data analysis using SPSS
- interpret the results of statistical analyses
- explain and execute the steps of a hypothesis test
- discuss the strengths and weaknesses of statistical tests
- critically evaluate other's interpretations of statistical analyses.
