Course Objectives

At the end of this course students will be able to;

  • Develop knowledge of environment and the human society interrelationship
  • Develop awareness of human rights and child rights in aspects of environmental responsibilities.
  • Develop lifelong learning skills such as problem solving, research, and communication skills that they will need as active citizens.
  • Plan for actions for their local, school or home environment to cope with climate change adaptation and mitigation.
  • Plan for developing a sustainable environment in their school and home environment.
  • Recognize the intrinsic value of nature and wish to help protect their natural environment.
  • Embrace an ethic of care, kindness and respectfulness towards all living things.
  • Develop students’ overall spirit of critical inquiry.

Course Content

Contemporary issues as a part of non-formal education in the school context, the students learning beyond the cognitive domain to develop lifelong learning skills in the affective and the psychomotor domain, the importance of social, cultural, artistic and sports activities at schools, problem-based learning and critical thinking learning environments, organizing sustainable, environmental-friendly action plans, or social accountability projects for school or out of school contexts as a social justice issue.


Course Learning Outcomes

. Through engaging students with problem-based learning and critical thinking learning environments, they will be able to identify the issues that may affect human lives, animals or the nature negatively, and take actions to organize sustainable, environmental-friendly contexts attending social accountability projects for retaining or improving their school, home, or local contexts for social justice.

Fundamental issues related to human rights, equity, fairness, media literacy, eco-friendly schools, climate change, civic education, and disaster education will be discussed and simple solutions will be planned to develop lifelong learning skills as prospective teachers or other professionals. International projects such as that of the European Commission or Tübitak promote the learning of non-formal education through collateral projects with students, teachers, NGOs and academics at international and national level. This course may help students to become critical and reflective practitioners in their fields. The course, especially, may help prospective teachers with different credentials adopt the acquired knowledge and skills in the affective domain in relation to social justice.
