Course Objectives

  • Comprehend basic concepts of visual arts.
  • Recognize the artistic elements in a young child work.
  • Understand the rationale for aesthetics in early childhood education.
  • Recognize the components of a complete early childhood art program. 
  • Understand the characteristics of a variety of learning materials for young children.
  • Show awareness to adapt a variety of materials for children who have special needs.
  • Appreciate indigenous, recyclable, and commercial materials to create developmentally appropriate activities suitable for young children.  

Course Content

Definition, meaning and the purpose of visual arts. Art criticism, the history of the visual arts and aesthetic judgements. Preparation and application of different kinds of paints using different materials, such as crayons, water coloring, clay and ceramics. Construction of musical instruments and toys, puppets; finger puppet, cloth puppets, wooden puppet, string puppet by using waste materials. Principles and standards of toy construction, design of a kindergarten or playground.

  • Describe such aesthetic criteria as line, color, shape, pattern, space, and texture. Integrate the categories and physical properties of artistic elements.
  • Prepare an art activity that will help children learn about artistic elements.
  • Prepare materials for children with special needs.
  • Describe how to choose and use materials that are suitable for children with special needs.
  • Describe teacher role to help children who have special needs use materials that both open-ended and closed-ended.
  • Use art critique to discuss a work of art.
  • Categorize the major divisions of artistic styles.
  • Prepare developmentally appropriate art activities for young children.
  • Describe the tools, materials, and techniques for two-dimensional activities.
  • Describe the tools, materials, and techniques for 3-D activities.
  • Describe strategies for using open-ended materials in the class.
  • Describe the difference between open-ended and closed materials.
  • Discuss the ways to use open-ended and closed-ended materials in the class.
  • Discuss the ways to use high-structured and low structured materials in the class.
  • Describe the aesthetic attitude, process, experience, response, and value.
  • Discuss the teacher’s role in aesthetics.
  • Give examples for the selection of art prints for display in the classroom.
