Course Objectives

By the end of this course students will;

1. be aware of the nature and shape of literature as a school subject at the primary and elementary school levels.

2. be aware of recent children’s literature that may be useful to teach other school subjects, in addition to literature, such as reading, language arts, social studies, art, music, health, and science.


Course Content

The importance of books for the growing child, development of childrens literature in the world and Turkey; characteristics of childrens publications; stories, folk tales, fairy tales, fable, biography, poem, riddle, etc.


Course Learning Outcomes

  • Find pleasure and enjoyment in children’s literature through reading many children’s books.
  • Evaluate children’s books for their literary and artistic strengths and weaknesses and develop this ability through interactive literature discussion groups.
  • Acquire survey knowledge of Turkey and international children’s literature: to have read and appreciated some prose and poetry of all kinds for young children.
  • Know the life and works of one author and/or one illustrator.
  • Begin building a personal library of children’s books and professional books in this field.
  • Aware of various kinds of children’s literature, including literature that represents the diversity of our society – by gender, race, ethnicity, language, religion, and about individuals with disabilities.
  • Demonstrate an ability to make interesting and informative presentations.
  • Demonstrate an ability to read orally in an entertaining fashion.
  • Acquire an array of techniques to asses reading interests, behaviors, and attitudes through alternative assessment strategies, such as running records of books read and enjoyed, reading interest inventories, checklists, interviews, observation, library records, and student response papers and to involve parents and children in book-related activities.

10To be able to take responsibility and to fulfill these responsibilities in individual and group work.
11To understand the importance of family involvement in children's education and to plan activities related to family involvement.
12To have knowledge about literary genres prepared for pre-school children and to examine existing publications in terms of literary and artistic perspectives.
13To have knowledge about the importance and purpose of the use of formal and informal assessment methods appropriate for the age level and developmental level of pre-school children, and to apply and interpret different evaluation methods and to be able to interpret findings.
14To be able to follow/access, understand and question scientific publications for pre-school education.
