Course Objectives

The course objectives are elaborating and discussing

  • how the changing world conditions led to the revival of the strategic spatial planning,
  • what general principles it consists of (both the planning process and plan),
  • how these general principles are interpreted in different planning systems
  • what visual techniques are applied in plan-making
  • how a strategic spatial plan differentiates than a land-use plan.

Course Content

The changing world conditions that brought about the Strategic Spatial Planning approach. The Emerging Communicative Rationality Paradigm. The new phenomena and problems that urban areas encounter in the face of the new world order. The theory of Strategic Spatial Planning: New Policy agendas and new inter-institutional relations. The relation between the Strategic Spatial Planning & Mainstream Land-Use Planning. The organization of the strategic planning process: Participatory Planning Approach. The new techniques introduced with the strategic spatial planning. The Turkish planning system vis-a-vis the strategic spatial planning. Study of practical examples. Analyses of nation-specific factors that shape the interpretation of strategic spatial planning practices.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students are expected to familiarize with this contemporary and increasingly widespread approach, learn its constant characteristics, and acknowledge its different interpretation in different planning contexts.
