Course Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge on the basic concepts and principles of disaster risk management of cultural heritage; accumulation of the basic knowledge and experience in order to be able to carry out first-level vulnerability and risk assessments for cultural heritage buildings/sites.

 By the end of the course, the students will

  • know the basic concepts and principles of disaster risk management of cultural heritage
  • understand the risk governance of cultural heritage in Turkey
  • accumulate the basic knowledge and skills to be able to carry out first-level vulnerability and risk assessments, and to formulate risk reduction goals and strategies for cultural heritage buildings/sites
  • demonstrate an interest in proactively mitigating risks for cultural heritage.

Course Content

The case for disaster risk management (DRM) of Cultural Heritage, concepts and principles of DRM of cultural heritage, the context in Turkey and governance for disaster-resilient cultural heritage, understanding the context and the value at risk, identification of natural and human induced hazards, vulnerability analysis, risk analysis, risk-based decision-making, mitigation strategies, emergency preparedness and response, recovery planning, issues of repair and rehabilitation.


Course Learning Outcomes

Knowledge: By the end of this course, the students will

  • recall the core principles of disaster risk management of cultural heritage
  • explain the phases of disaster risk management cycle in their own words
  • know the responsibilities of public institutions across the spectrum of DRM of cultural heritage practices

Skills: By the end of this course, the students will be able to

  • examine intrinsic, contextual, and institutional vulnerabilities of cultural heritage to a given hazard event
  • examine the relationships between hazards, vulnerability, and risk. [These analysis skills will enable them to make informed judgments and decisions related to risks to cultural heritage.]
  • propose risk prevention, mitigation and preparedness goals and strategies for a cultural heritage building/site

Attitudes: By the end of this course, the students will

  • begin pro-active risk preparedness actions in the built environment.
