Course Objectives
- To introduce students to methods for analyzing the historical urban environment with a focus on form, pattern, and spatial organization.
- To develop students’ ability to interpret the morphological components of historic settlements, including plots, buildings, and open spaces.
- To encourage a research-based understanding of the socio-cultural, functional, and physical characteristics of historical urban areas.
- To support the development of site-specific evaluations that inform heritage conservation and planning strategies.
- To cultivate critical thinking about the continuity and change of historic urban components through time.
Course Content
Research in historic environment with emphasis on urban pattern, building typology, changes in the built form in historic areas, or issues of conservation, such as relationship of old and new; residential use in historic urban sites.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Conduct in-depth spatial and historical analysis of selected historical urban areas.
- Interpret the dynamics of change in urban form, building typologies, and land use patterns over time.
- Evaluate the heritage significance of urban components in relation to their historical context.
- Develop site-specific research proposals or conservation-oriented interpretations based on morphological analysis.
- Present research findings clearly through oral presentations, analytical drawings, and written reports.
