Course Objectives

  • To introduce students to methods for analyzing the historical urban environment with a focus on form, pattern, and spatial organization.
  • To develop students’ ability to interpret the morphological components of historic settlements, including plots, buildings, and open spaces.
  • To encourage a research-based understanding of the socio-cultural, functional, and physical characteristics of historical urban areas.

Course Content

Research in historic environment with emphasis on urban pattern, building typology, changes in the built form in historic areas, or issues of conservation, such as relationship of old and new; residential use in historic urban sites.


Course Learning Outcomes

 

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe key components of historical urban form and structure.
  • Analyze urban patterns and their formation processes in relation to topography, use, and cultural context.
  • Investigate building lots, housing groups, street patterns, and open spaces through historical and spatial documentation.
  • Recognize transformation processes in historical environments over time.
  • Employ basic research techniques and visual tools for the representation and analysis of historic urban fabric.
