Course Coordinator:Assoc.Prof.Dr. AYŞE DUMAN
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course:

  • the students will practice and review the properties of historic materials and their state of preservation by using some laboratory facilities and in-situ tests;
  • the students will review current conservation approaches and techniques with a critical view of historic materials’ compatibility and durability properties;
  • the students will review some case studies and their discussions concerning the conservation of historic materials in the context of material science in conservation.

Course Content

Assessment of the state of preservation and durability of historic building materials, selection and preparation of repair materials, methods for controlling decay factors, and development of repair and maintenance programs for historic structures. Current conservation approaches and techniques with a critical view of their compatibility and performance in the field. Case studies concerning the conservation of historic materials and structures and their discussion in the context of material science in conservation.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the successful students are expected to:

  • propose laboratory and in-situ tests in the context of a case study: on physical and physicomechanical properties, compatibility and durability characteristics of historic material, their raw materials composition and weathering state;
  • practice some tests in relation the case study proposal;
  • develop repair and maintenance program for the case study.
