Course Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge on all cultural periods and contexts of Anatolian history and civilizations; improvement of skills and attitudes to deal with, and protect, without bias, this complex stratigraphy of cultures

Knowledge: Formation of a cultural background in terms of architectural history and built environment of all periods that formed the entangled mélange of Anatolian civilizations in their Eastern Mediterranean context and the expertise of using the relevant literature

Skills: Improvement of skills and abilities to develop independent research and critical awareness in inter-related disciplines investigating the past (history, history of art and architecture, archeology etc)

Attitudes: Development of awareness towards the cultural heritage of all civilizations with equal care and respect 


Course Content

A study on the beginnings of Turkish architecture outside of Anatolia, the cultural remains of the civilizations dominating Anatolia prior to the arrival of the Turks, and Anatolian Turkish architecture from the conquest up to the end of the Ottoman Empire. Emphasis on the effects of geography, climate, and cultural demands.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

Knowledge:

  • Identify, discuss, and interpret the different cultural and chronological contexts in terms of art and architectural history and planning characteristics
  • Improve expertise in the use of the relevant sources (ancient and modern)

Skills:

  • Develop critical awareness, understanding, and interpretation of all cultures forming the large and diverse cultural and chronological context of Anatolia
  • Build up abilities of independent research

Attitudes:

  • Demonstrate awareness, sensibility, and professional ethics towards cultural diversity and utmost care for the cultural heritage of all civilizations, without bias.
