Offered Semester:Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course include:

- to get the students acquainted with basic principle and main application of group theory.

- to give an idea of molecular symmetry and its implementations.

- to be able to use symmetry properties of wavefunctions and operations in quantum mechanical calculations.

- to teach how to interpret electronic and vibrational spectra of molecules using symmetry approach.

- to inform about ligand field theory, Tanabe-Sugano diagrams, wavefunction and its physical meaning.

Course Content

The course consists of two parts. In the first, principles, definitions and theorems of group theory, molecular symmetry representations of groups, group theory and quantum mechanics; in the second part, applications; symmetry aspects of molecular orbital theory, ligand field theory. VIS and UV spectra of transition metal complexes, metalligand bonding, molecular vibrations, and symmetry rules are considered.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the student will:

- learn symmety, point groups and character tables.

- interpret the electronic and vibrational spectra of the molecules.

- be able to extend their knowledge and discuss any topics related to group theory, quantum mechanics, molecular symmetry and so forth.
