Course Code:2340525
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (3.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:8.0
Department:Chemistry
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Graduate
Course Coordinator:Prof.Dr. JALE HACALOĞLU
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

The students will be able to differentiate the merits and limitations of the basic types of mass spectrometers considering the type of the analyzers such as tandem, time-of-flight, quadrupole, and type of the ion source such as electron impact, chemical ionization, filed ionization, matrix-assisted laser desorption, electron spray, etc, used in different fields of science for different purposes.

Course Content

Basic principles of mass spectroscopy. Ionization and fragmentation processes, their thermochemical aspects. Mass spectrometers: vacuum instruments, ion sources, mass analyzers, detectors. Applications in analytical, organic, physical and polymer chemistry.

Course Learning Outcomes

Student, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

  • choose the most appropriate type of mass spectrometer for a certain purpose.
  • analyze mass spectrum of a given substance
