METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (3.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:7.5
Department:Chemistry
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Undergraduate
Course Coordinator:Assoc.Prof.Dr. ÖZGÜL PERSİL ÇETİNKOL
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

The primary objective of this course is for students to learn the fundamentals of contemporary biochemistry, name the structure and activity of the four major classes of biological macromolecules: nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids and describe the basic aspects of Michaelis Menten enzyme kinetics and catalysis. Through CHEM413 the students will gain the fundamental knowledge to understand the key molecular processes in biology.

Course Content

A chemical approach to biochemistry. A study of the structures and functions of biomolecules, metabolism and bioenergetics, replication, transcription and translation processes with an emphasis on the chemical structures, transformations.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students will know the structures of amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates, and the cellular processes, such as replication, transcription, translation, enzyme mechanisms, enzyme kinetics, and the recombinant DNA technology methods, PCR
