Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the students will
- understand the principles of membrane separations
- distinguish and describe the membrane properties required for different membrane processes
- be able to analyze and design membrane-based separation processes
Course Content
Membrane concept. Principles of membrane separations and applications in biotechnology. Membrane preparation techniques, applications of membranes in stream purification in product recovery and in industrial wastewater treatment.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the students will be able to:
- Define membrane properties related to rate and extent of separation
- Describe the properties required for different membrane processes
- Recognize and describe the effects of concentration polarization and membrane fouling on membrane filtrations
- Describe factors affecting selectivity and permeability in dense polymeric membranes
- Analyze and design membrane-based separation processes
