CENG590 RESEARCH METHODS AND ETHICS

Course Code:5710590
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (0.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:8.0
Department:Computer Engineering
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Graduate
Course Coordinator:Prof.Dr. FERDA NUR ALPASLAN
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the strategies and ethical issues related to writing and presenting academic research. At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. define research: explain and apply research terms; describe the research process and the principle activities, skills and ethics associated with the research process,

2. conduct research: form hypotheses; describe the research questions for investigating hypotheses; design and conduct the experiments for the research questions,

3. analyze and assess results: analyze the data collected from an experiment, and draw conclusions,

4. identify ethical issues related to conducting research and writing academic text, and

5. determine a suitable outline and strategy for writing an academic text.

Course Content

(i) Research methods, namely how to formulate a hypothesis and pose a research question for it, how to design and perform experiments for investigating a research question, how to analyze the results of an experiment and draw conclusions; (ii) research and publication ethics; namely, the ethical issues that arise in conducting research and writing academic texts; (iii) how to write academic texts; namely the style, the organization, and the outline of academic texts such as conference papers, journal articles and theses.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to define and assess research problems, will be able to conduct experiments, and present their results as an academic manuscript.
