Course Objectives

This course aims to provide students with the necessary background and skills:

  • To identify the major approaches to Learning Analytics and related Educational Data Mining (EDM) models.
  • To understand the essential characteristics of basic LA methods and their applications to develop educational interventions.
  • To provide necessary knowledge and skills to perform LA by using a data set.

Course Content

Fundamentals of Learning Analytics with an emphasis on the significance of data to improve both learning and teaching in addition to the instructional systems; the ways of collecting and analyzing data; data and its interpretation overview of learning analytics including the key concepts and dimensions of the field; different techniques and tools used in learning analytics.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Identify and describe key factors affecting and informing the design and implementation of learning analytics interventions,
  • Be familiar with the basics of collecting, cleaning, transforming, managing, and analyzing educational data,
  • Be familiar with some of the popular data analytic techniques, including clustering, predictive models, text analysis, process mining,
  • Develop awareness and skills necessary for applying learning analytics.
