Course Objectives

Understand the inelastic response of RC members under various types of loading.


Course Content

General RC behavior: Moment-curvature relationship; plastic hinge, redistribution. Behavior and strength of members under combined shear and torsion: Equilibrium torsion, compatibility torsion, punching, capacity design. Repair/Strengthening Principles: Column, beam, slab repair, structural system improvement. Seismic design principles. Serviceability. Detailing.

  • Examine the behaviour of confined concrete
  • Construct nonlinear moment-curvature relationships
  • Examine the behavior of reinforced concrete columns under uniaxial and biaxial bending
  • Design structural members for combined effects of shear and torsion
  • Design structural members under punching shear
  • Identify the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete members.
