Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the students will be able to

  • gain a clear understanding of the operations functions in service and manufacturing firms and how it integrates with the overall business.
  • analyze decision problems in operations.
  • develop the skills to apply specific operational techniques.
  • apply the knowledge learned to actual organizations.

Course Content

Introduction to Managerial problems in production and operations; design, planning and control of production and service systems. Topics covered; Demand Management, Product Design, Process Selection, Job Design and Work Measurement, Capacity Planning, Facility Layout/Location Problems, Aggregate/Master Production Scheduling, Inventory Management, Operations Scheduling, MRP II, JIT and TOC.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the students will be able to

  • define the term operations management.
  • identify similarities and differences between production and service operations.
  • discuss and compare organization strategy and operations strategy, and explain why it is important to link the two.
  • define the term productivity and explain why it is important to organizations and countries
  • apply different forecasting techniques such as.averaging techniques, trend and seasonal techniques, and regression analysis.
  • summarize the importance of capacity planning and describe the determinants of effective capacity.
  • explain the strategic importance of process selection and compare the basic processing types.
  • describe the basic layout types, and the main advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • solve assembly line balancing problems.
  • identify some of the main reasons organizations need to make location decisions and the major factors that affect location decisions.
  • define the term quality as it relates to products and as it relates to services and explain why quality is important and the consequences of poor quality.
  • distinguish the costs associated with quality and describe various quality tools.
  • explain how control charts are used to monitor a process, and the concepts that underlie their use.
  • explain what aggregate planning is and how it is useful and identify the variables decision makers have to work with in aggregate planning and some of the possible strategies they can use.
  • describe the conditions under which MRP is most appropriate and describe the inputs, outputs, and nature of MRP processing.
  • define the term inventory, list the major reasons for holding inventories, and list the main requirements for effective inventory management.
  • explain periodic and continuous review systems.
  • describe the basic EOQ model and its assumptions and solve typical problems.
  • describe situations in which the single-period model would be appropriate, and solve typical problems.
  • explain what is meant by the term lean operations system and list the benefits of a lean system.
  • discuss the key issues of supply chain management (SCM) and name the recent trends in SCM.
