Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to teach the basic concepts of analytical modeling and computer analysis of building structures to M.S. level Architects

This course provides,

  • An overview for general types of structures,

  • Basic issues in the analysis of structures,

  • Structural loads and their environmental effects,

  • Basic principles in analytical modeling,

  • Material and element behavior,

  • Application of frame elements in analytical model,

  • Applications of plate and shell elements in analytical model,

  • Application of solid elements in analytical model,

  • Analysis of building structures for vertical loads,

  • Analysis of building structures for horizontal loads,

  • Analysis of building structures for special loads,

  • Verification and interpretation of analysis results,

  • Application of computer analysis for characteristic architectural forms


Course Content

Basic principles for analytical modeling of structural systems. Hierarchy of models. Techniques for understanding behavior of structural elements. Material behavior, element behavior. Use of elements in frames, walls, plates, shells and 3-D solid modeling. Linear analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate structures; calculation of elastic displacements. Introduction to seismic analysis of building structures: basic concepts and, methods of solution. Checking the model and evaluating the results.

By the end of the course the successful students are expected to:
