Offered Semester:Fall and Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

1. become familiar with experimental techniques in immunology

2. describe how to isolate and/or differentiate immune cells of human and mouse origin to conduct in vitro experiments

3. understand the principles of flow cytometry and sorting

4. describe methods used to assess cell proliferation and cytotoxicity

5.  become familiar with induction of antigen specific immune responses and methods used to quantitate these responses (ELISA, ELISpot, tetramer staining, etc)

6. become familiar with Selected Animal Models used in immunology (manipulations, following disease progression and evaluation of results)

Course Content

Introduction to curent protocols in immunology, principles of experimental design to study an immunology related problem, introduction to animal models of infectious, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases , animal models of transplantation and tumor immunology.Isolation of lymphoid cells from human and murine tissues and blood, principles of flow cytometry and its applications, proliferation and cytotoxicity assays, tetramer staining methods, ELISA, ELISPOT and cytometric bead array and adoptive cell transfer are among the major techniques what will be covered

Course Learning Outcomes

1. learn about the animal models of infectious, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, animal models of transplantation and tumor immunology

2. describe principles of flow cytometry and identify methods used to delinieate immune activation based on flow cytometry

3. become familiar to operate flow cytometry (practical application)

4. using a combination of techniques and animal models discussed, the students are expected to design an experimental approach to study an immunology problem
