Offered Semester:Fall or Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to provide graduate students of the field an advance understanding of biodiversity conservation, utilization and issues with a holistic way (ecosystem and landscape approach) in a comparative way with a special emphasis on cases from Turkey.

Course Content

The first part of the course provides an overview of the current knowledge of the living world and various problems associated with its conservation, utilization and management for sustainability. In the second part, the habitat conservation approach and landscape ecology concept for sustainable natural resource management are discussed with selected systems such as mountain, agriculture and forest resources, important watersheds and riparian systems. The third part of course is devoted to the Turkish biodiversity and natural resources management activities and current issues in Turkey. In the last part of the course, the challenging current and future issues of natural resource management and utilization are tackled.

Course Learning Outcomes

After completing the course reqirements, students will be able to:

have indepth understanding of biodiversity, biodiversity issues, bidiversity conservation,

clear understanding of sustainable biodiversity and conservation and the relatiionship with the habitats,

have knowledge and skills to design effective conservation programs, and to evaluate critically for their sustainability,

learn the mechanism of ecosystem and landscape conservation for sustainable biodiversity conservation,

be familiar with adaptive management systems in biodiveristy and habitat conservation,

be infromed the biodiversity, conservation and conservation issues of  Turkey,

evaluate and discuss how predicted climate change scenarios  may effect the current biodiversity and biodiversity conservation in the world and Turkey.
