BIOL403 CONSERVATION BIOLOGY

Course Code:2380403
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (3.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:6.0
Department:Biology
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Undergraduate
Course Coordinator:Prof.Dr. CEMAL CAN BİLGİN
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

Course objectives include understanding concepts of biological diversity, current threats and losses, as well as the theoretical basis of nature conservation. Population and community level processes and their links with biodiversity conservation will be emphasized. During the course, the students will get acquainted with past conservation successes and failures, particulary those in Turkey, and learn how to tackle problems in the complicated task of nature conservation in today's world.

Course Content

The impact of mankind on the biological systems of the planet earth has been accelerated during the recent decades. Many plant and animal species along with thousands of valuable gene combinations are in danger of extinction. This course discusses the factors that threaten natural communities, and presents justifications and principles of conservation of ecosystems and species in maintaining rich biological diversity in our environment.

Course Learning Outcomes

Improved knowledge on the state of biological diversity in the world and in Turkey, including major threats and possible action to avoid extinctions

A toolkit to assess the best way to conserve a species or an ecosystem

A better understanding of the human factor (cultural, social, economic aspects) in conservation science
