Course Objectives

Student will know and recite the structures of informational molecules. They will know and recite the basics of DNA replication, transcription, translation, genetic coding system.              

      


Course Content

An introductory course offered to non-Biology students, covering the structure and properties of biomolecules, their interactions, organization of genes on chromosomes, replication and transcription of genetic material, protein synthesis and genetic engineering techniques.


Course Learning Outcomes

             

          By the end of the course, the students will be able to

 

  • draw the generic structure of a nucleotide and an amino acid
  • name the informational biomolecules
  • list the enzymes working in DNA replication
  • describe transcription
  • recite the sequence of events take place in translation
  • solve problems dealing with genetic code
  • design open reading frames
  • explain the ways in which gene expression is controlled
  • illustrate the steps of gene cloning
  • summarize the DNA profiling techniques
  • compare and contrast the eukaryotic and prokaryotic molecular biology 
  • list the ways of gene transfer in bacteria
