Course Objectives

The students:

  • learn the basic concepts in ecology at the individual, population, community and global scales,
  • understand the mechanisms behind interactions between individuals, populations and species,
  • interactions of organisms with the abiotic environment,
  • can describe biodiversity and how to measure it at different levels,
  • can describe nutrient and energy cycling in ecosystems,
  • understand the mechanisms behind major environmental problems such as climate change, pollution, habitat destruction and degradation, invasive species
  • can define sustainable natural use and problems related to this concept,
  • discuss the main drivers that underlie the efficient functioning of an ecosystem.

Course Content

This course aims to introduce the non-biology students to basic principles of ecology focusing on applied problems related to ecosystems.
