ARCH585 COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN RESEARCH LAB.

Course Code:1200585
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):4 (4.00 - 2.00)
ECTS Credit:10.0
Department:Architecture
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Masters
Course Coordinator:Assoc.Prof.Dr. AYŞEM BERRİN ÇAKMAKLI
Offered Semester:Fall or Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

A graduate experimental design studio in computational design research, searching for redefinitions and repositioning within the field and profession of architecture with respect to computational and cognitive research and morphogenetic studies. Integration of strategies and skills in computational design and critical appraisal of other discourses and paradigms within the hosting discipline and practice of design. Development of polymorphic and hybrid ways of creative thinking and production in the architecture/technology interface.

Course Content

Critical interaction of conceptual and applied/computational aspects of design research for the production of genuine architectural modes of thinking and expression. Exploration of new design situations and strategies with a theoretical/historical agenda. Evolutionary design systems. Formal sequences. Algorithmic design. Analog/digital modes of morphogenetic design. Projects and topics of research vary each term.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student will be able to

  • Research for redefinitions and repositioning within the field and profession of architecture, radically disrupted by the advent of digital technologies and procedures.
  • Make a critical appraisal of other discourses and paradigms within the hosting discipline and practice of design.
  • Develop hybrid ways of creative thinking and production in the architecture/technology interface.
  • Integrate strategies and skills in computational design.
