ARCH537 MAPPING AS DESIGN

Course Code:1200537
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (2.00 - 2.00)
ECTS Credit:8.0
Department:Architecture
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Graduate
Course Coordinator:Assoc.Prof.Dr. AYŞEM BERRİN ÇAKMAKLI
Offered Semester:Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

Course Objectives include improving knowledge and competence to use the theoretical and methodological information in the area of presentation and design in architecture, while developing sensibility to the urban environments that we live in. The students are expected to gain the ability to visualize and emphasize ‘lived space’ in architectural design, and improve the capability to express a critical design position with proper visual media. Also achieving the ability to access required information related to the concepts, discussions and developments, and developing consciousness of professional and ethical responsibilities in the field of architecture are emphasized.

Course Content

Architectural and urban design in complex urban environments using mapping techniques. Readings for introducing the theory and the role/use of mapping in architectural and urban design, and discussion on examples from the world. Use of mapping techniques by students for a novel understanding of the lived space in the contemporary city and its and elaboration as the initiator/basis of design proposals.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student will be able to

  • Understand and interpret the contemporary mapping theory for developing a critical design position in architecture and urban design,
  • Make comprehensive research on urban themes to form a basis for design,
  • Employ the knowledge gained in the undergraduate design programs to respond to the current developments in fields of design, theory and criticism, urban and landscape research,
  • Critically evaluate the relations of social, cultural, political, artistic and philosophical issues and theories to architecture within the scope of lived urban environments,
  • Make use of knowledge and research results to propose novel design approaches in architecture and urban design.
