Course Objectives
The course aims at developing an understanding of social and cultural theories on urban phenomena in relation with the urban studies in architecture. The students are expected to;
- Acquire knowledge on social and cultural theories related with the built environment,
- Develop an understanding of urban phenomena with reference to these theories,
- Relate social and cultural studies with the studies of urban form, urban space and place.
Course Content
The course aims at exploring urban questions from the perspective of different disciplines urban sociology, urban geography, cultural studies, political philosophy as well as architecture. Production processes of urban spaces and spatial practices are studied in relation with social, cultural and political aspects.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student is able to;
- Relate socio-cultural theories with urban studies in architecture,
- Relate socio-cultural theories with architectural practices in urban context,
- Analyze urban phenomena with reference to the theoretical frameworks studied,
- Write an academic paper based on research.
