Course Objectives

This course aims at a comprehensive study of contemporary Eurasia with a special emphasis on historical and world context. Focusing upon the great transformation Eurasian societies have experienced, the course will cover the following issues: social, cultural and political effects of transition to free market economy; the rise of nationalism and ethnic cleavages; religious entities, demography, family, migration patterns and other related issues.


Course Content

This course aims at a comprehensive study of contemporary Eurasia with a special emphasis on historical and world context. Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will:
• have a solid general knowledge of the key aspects of state-building in Eurasia and become familiar with theoretical debates on transition, democratisation, state-building, and nation-building;
• be able to identify similarities and differences among post-Soviet states and societies, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia;
• enhance their oral and written communication skills, particularly in presenting and discussing academic ideas and arguments;
• gain experience in conducting independent research and writing analytical essays using both library and online resources.

The course is designed to encourage interactive discussions and active student participation. Emphasis will be placed on fostering conceptual and critical thinking, constructing logical and coherent arguments, and effectively elaborating on academic ideas and concepts.
