Course Objectives

The course sets out to:

  • develop an understanding of materials experience in both generative (design) and evaluative (user) contexts;
  • examine the sensory, cognitive, affective, and performative dimensions of material interactions;
  • explore contemporary topics and interdisciplinary factors linked to materials experience;
  • encourage critical and creative inquiry through a major project focused on material-oriented research and/or design.

Course Content

Explores how productive materials are influential on user-product interactions and resultant user experiences (UX). Expressive and utilitarian uses of materials are exemplified, taking design-based approach to materials evaluation. Materials experience as an instantaneous / cumulative and personal / shared phenomenon is investigated. Focus is given to inter-relations between material properties, sensorial qualities, aesthetics, meanings, emotions and behavior. Various sub-topics connecting materials and design are analyzed, material resources, material decision-making, material - focused design methods and tools, materialization versus digitalization. A major materials experience research and/or design project is undertaken.


Course Learning Outcomes

On completing the course, students will be able to:

  • analyse and describe material experiences by making use of dynamic-interactional and static-visual lenses;
  • investigate and communicate the role of materials and material properties in shaping user-product relationships;
  • critically reflect on emerging material trends, sustainability challenges, and opportunities for innovation in material design and material-driven design;
  • formulate and execute a material-centred design or research project that demonstrates depth and originality.
