Course Objectives
This course provides:
- an understanding of the common terminology/vocabulary of twentieth century architecture in Turkey;
- a working knowledge of architectural forms, types, concepts and movements in relation to building technologies, urban changes and historical and cultural events in this context;
- the ability to analyze and discuss architecture in relation to contextual characteristics.
Course Content
The course surveys and evaluates major developments in architecture during the twentieth century in Turkey. The objective is to examine the stylistic, technological, typological, urban and professional transformations in contemporary architectural production with reference to the frames of nationalism, internationalism, modernization, post‐modernism and globalization.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the successful students are expected to:
- identify and critically respond to architecture of the twentieth century in Turkey;
- understand and explain twentieth century architecture in Turkey in relation to historical issues, and social / cultural / economic / political themes; develop and demonstrate analytical and critical approach towards the built environment of twentieth century Turkey;
- evaluate the chronological and comparative framework of the transformations in twentieth century architecture.
