Course Objectives

This course aims to problematize the question of state and state intervention in the economy, by re-visiting the core theories of political economy. Students will be able to periodize historically how political institutions shape economic policy choices and outcomes. With a historical, along with conceptual analysis, different forms of interventions to the markets and their outcomes will be presented.


Course Content

This course is designed to provide a critical survey of recent developments. It analyzes the state as a new focus of interest in the context of economic liberalization and globalisation processes. It focuses, in particular, on the changing role of the state in the course of political and economic transformations taking place in contemporary capitalist societies.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

Explain how power relations (class, elites, institutions) structure economic outcomes.

Critique ideological assumptions underlying policy paradigms (e.g., austerity, universal basic income).

Apply political economy tools to real-world cases (e.g., inflation responses, labor market reforms).

Debate the state’s role in technological innovation and green transitions.
