Course Objectives

The course aims to familiarize students with the historical trajectories of European state formation and their societal impacts. From such a historical perspective, the course helps students compare the post-WWII models of welfare capitalism in different European countries and as such, help analyze the role of European integration in the reconfiguration of state-society relations in Europe. 


Course Content

This course is intended to familiarize the students with the major models of state-economy and state-capital-labour relations in the advanced capitalist systems of Europe, with a specific emphasis on ´Anglo-Saxon´, ´organized market economy´ and ´state-centered´ models. With this framework, the course also analyzes the key institutional structures of industrial relations, corporate governance and their relation to the welfare state, and the changes produced by globalization and European integration.

Students will be able to:

Explain variations in European state capacity and bureaucratic traditions

Assess the role of social movements in shaping European democracies

Critique narratives of European exceptionalism or convergence

Connect historical patterns to current crises (e.g., Brexit, refugee policy)

Design comparative research on state-society relations
