Course Objectives

This course aims to provide a broad historical analysis of the relationship between Europe (primarily the EU and key states) and the United States. The course aims to cover selected topics such as transatlantic security (NATO, deterrence), economic ties (trade, sanctions, TTIP, competition), diplomatic cooperation/conflict (Ukraine, China policy), and cultural-ideational influences. The course also aims to examine these topics from different theoretical frameworks.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:

Understand the historical foundations of the transatlantic alliance (post-WWII to present).

Evaluate theoretical debates on cooperation/conflict in Euro-American relations.

Analyze key policy areas (e.g., defense, trade, climate, digital governance) through comparative case studies.

Assess the impact of internal politics (e.g., EU integration, U.S. polarization) on bilateral and multilateral ties.
